YEREVAN (CoinChapter.com) — The Biden administration wants to ban gas stoves across the United States. According to a recent report, the US Government has cited health concerns for its latest approach, thanks to the harmful pollutants that gas appliances release into the air.

The agency behind the idea, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), relies on recent studies claiming that gas appliance emissions can cause health and respiratory problems.

“This is a hidden hazard. Any option is on the table. Products that can’t be made safe can be banned,”

Bloomberg quoted CPSC Commissioner Richard Trumka Jr. saying.

The American Chemical Society and New York University Law School’s Institute for Policy Integrity were instrumental in the study.

The emissions from domestic gas stoves have been flagged as harmful by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the World Health Organization (WHO).

According to WHO, household air pollution was responsible for an estimated 3.2 million deaths per year in 2020. Out of this, over 237,000 deaths were those of children under 5.

“It is essential to expand use of clean fuels and technologies to reduce household air pollution and protect health. These include solar, electricity, biogas, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), natural gas, alcohol fuels, as well as biomass stoves that meet the emission targets in the WHO Guidelines,”

Last summer, a study out of Stanford showed that gas stoves emit greenhouse gases, including methane (CH4), even when not in use.

Banning gas stoves a huge blow to US households

While the US Government may have legitimate concerns, the move will come as a huge blow to ordinary citizens. On Average, 35%-40% of US households still rely on gas stoves daily to cook meals. This number amounts to over 40 million homes.

In some states, this number is much higher than the national Average. For example, in California and New Jersey, as many as 70% of households use gas stoves.

With inflation already over the roof, a much greener alternative will be an extra financial burden on them.

The move, however, has already caused a political storm. Some Democratic lawmakers, including Elizabeth Warren, Cory Booker, and Don Beyer, have written to the CPSC, urging them to take urgent action.

According to Democrats, low-income households, especially in the black and Latino communities, are most affected by the harmful emissions from gas stoves.

Meanwhile, their political opponents argue that the move will first negatively impact the group that the Biden Administration claims to be concerned for.

“Now the communists want to ban gas stoves “for our health.” When will Republicans stop these people? I love my gas stove. F**k electric stoves. And where do they think that electricity comes from?”

one angry US citizen wrote.

As always, the Biden Administration has its priorities mixed up. Some experts have already pointed out that the US Government should focus on other solutions, like improving home ventilation.

It remains to be seen if the US Government will succeed in its plan to ban gas stoves from households. Rest assured; it won’t be easy.
