YEREVAN (CoinChapter.com) —  Elon Musk revealed upcoming changes to the X algorithm that aim to promote educational and informative content. Musk shared the update on January 3, stating that the decision was driven by concerns over “too much negativity” on the platform. In his post, Musk wrote:

“Our goal is to maximize un-regretted user-seconds. Too much negativity is being pushed that technically grows user time, but not un-regretted user time.”

This announcement prompted questions from users, including independent journalist James Li, who asked,

“How does the algorithm determine ‘negativity’?”

Users expressed concerns about how the platform would classify content and the potential implications for free speech.

Users Criticize Algorithm Changes as Censorship

Many users on X characterized the algorithm changes as a form of censorship. They argued that the update could limit open discussions and stifle opposing views.

The backlash came just days after Musk allegedly revoked premium features from several accounts following a dispute over immigration policies. Some users accused Musk of using his authority to suppress dissent.

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin addressed the controversy, urging Musk to prioritize free speech. Buterin stated:

“Respecting free speech is easy when we agree with the speech, and hard when we think it’s awful. But the arguments for respecting free speech anyway are the same as ever: the banhammer is controlled by one group today, it will be controlled by another group tomorrow.”

Immigration Debate Fuels Tensions on X

On Dec. 27, Musk proposed reforms to the U.S. immigration system to attract top talent from abroad. This suggestion sparked criticism from right-wing influencers, who argued that the U.S. already had sufficient talent and needed stricter immigration policies.

The changes to the X algorithm follow Musk’s previous clashes over censorship, including a high-profile dispute with the Brazilian government that resulted in a temporary ban of the platform in the country.
