YEREVAN (CoinChapter.com) — United States House Speaker Kevin McCarthy met with Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen in California despite a stern warning from China. The Republican Congressman led a bipartisan delegation to the meeting, with representatives from both parties joining in a rare show of solidarity.

Last week, President Tsai received a warm welcome from supporters when she arrived in New York on her way to a 10-day visit to friendly Central American nations, Guatemala and Belize. But, as speculations of her meeting with McCarthy did the rounds, China warned of severe consequences should the top US lawmaker meet her.

Amid the worsening relations between Washington and Beijing, the House Speaker promised to push for continued US support for China’s adversary.

Calling Taiwan “a thriving democracy,” McCarthy hit out at China, showing utter disregard for the messages coming from Xi Ji Ping’s Government.

“The friendship between the people of Taiwan and America is a matter of profound importance to the free world. It is critical to maintain deep economic freedom, peace and regional stability. We will honor our obligations and reiterate our strong values, behind which all Americans are united,”

McCarthy said.
Kevin McCarthy and President Tsai Ing-wen gave a joint briefing despite warnings from China.

During the meeting, which took place at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library, Tsai Ing-wen warned that democracy was under threat. She further thanked the United States for the unwavering support Washington has shown Taiwan.

“In our efforts to protect our way of life, Taiwan is grateful to have the United States by our side,”

China slams the United States for undermining its territorial integrity

The meeting with Kevin McCarthy and President Tsai again angered official Beijing.

Despite Taiwan’s self-rule, China has long claimed ownership over the small island nation. The United States, which has been Taipei’s strongest defense ally, does not recognize the country’s independence to uphold its commitment to the One-China policy.

However, Beijing has demanded that the United States stop engaging with Taiwan altogether. Meanwhile, Washington has promised to come to Taiwan’s aid if China attacks the island.

“The Taiwan question is at the core of China’s interests and the first red line that must not be crossed in China-US relations…US House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, the number three in the US government, had a high-profile meeting with Tsai. It seriously infringes upon China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity… China firmly opposes and strongly condemns it,”

China’s foreign ministry announced
The Chinese Foreign Ministry said Beijing would take resolute measures to defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity following Kevin McCarthy’s meeting with the Taiwanese president.

Warning the United States that “China will take strong and resolute measures to defend our sovereignty and territorial integrity,” Beijing demanded that Washington stop all official exchanges with Taiwan. Moreover, Xi Ji Ping warned of severe consequences if the Biden Administration continues to “go further down the wrong and dangerous path.”

House minority leader Jeffries Hakeem (Democrat) had also met the Taiwanese president when she was transiting New York.

US-China relations continue to decline. Beijing has sided with sanctions-hit Russia on various issues and is working to end the dominance of the US Dollar. The warm reception of the Taiwanese president is sure to escalate tensions further.
