Kathy Griffin has been suspended from Twitter for impersonating Elon Musk.

LAGOS (CoinChapter.com) — Elon Musk’s new era as the Twitter owner continues to dominate headlines as he implements new policies causing resentment among the social media platform users.

On Nov 6, Musk tweeted on Sunday that Twitter would permanently suspend any account on the social media platform that impersonates another. This development followed a joke played by Emmy Awards-winning comedian Kathy Griffin.

Griffin had changed her Twitter name to Elon Musk and was tweeting as the Tesla CEO urging people to vote for Democrats in the upcoming midterm elections. However, not seeing the move as an impractical joke, Musk permanently banned Griffin from Twitter.

Following the ban, the platform’s new owner warned other celebrities and users that impersonation without clearly specifying “parody” would result in permanent suspension. However, he further indicated that, unlike before, no warning would be given before suspension as widespread verification is being rolled out.

“Previously, we issued a warning before the suspension, but now that we are rolling out widespread verification, there will be no warning. This will be identified as a condition for signing up to Twitter Blue,”

Elon Musk tweeted.

Kathy Griffin Vs. Elon Musk

Meanwhile, Kathy Griffin isn’t going down with a fight as the comedian took her late mother’s account to demand her reinstallment. Kathy’s mother, Maggie, passed away in 2019. However, she has held on to her Twitter handle instead of closing it.

In the account’s first tweet in over three years, Kathy used it to start the hashtag #FreeKathy. The Emmys Awards winning comedian also used the opportunity to condemn Musk’s new rule about the parody tag.

She also accused Musk of stealing people’s jokes. She said:

“I mean… you stole that joke, you asshole. People have been posting that joke for hours, you hack. Look, please do a better job running this company. It used to mean something. This is KG, btw.”

Musk responded to Griffin’s banning, noting that she could have her account back for the stipulated $8. Despite her handle showing her @kathygriffin name, the moniker is by her blue checkmark. Elon Musk said this goes against the company policy against impersonation.

Additionally, Griffin wasn’t the only celebrity to change their display names to Musk, but not their account names. Hot in Cleveland actor Valerie Bertinelli also pulled a similar prank but escaped suspension.

Meanwhile, Blank Check co-host Griffin Newman suspended his account after impersonating Musk, even though he marked the tweets as parodies.

‘Twitter Employees Were Selling Verification Badges’

In a related development, Elon Musk has also attacked previous company employees, saying some of them sold Twitter verification badges (blue tick) to some individuals for thousands of dollars.

According to Musk, some employees sold the verification badge to unqualified people for amounts ranging from $15,000. He disclosed this while responding to a user who asked if the allegations were true.

The chaotic changes to the social network have come so fast that some are now being reversed. Notably, after sacking thousands of staff members on Friday, Twitter has started to ask “dozens” to return to work, according to a report in Bloomberg.
