New Delhi(coinchapter.com): Despite Russian President Vladimir Putin’s war in Ukraine and his threats to use nuclear weapons, President Joe Biden still views China as the most major geopolitical challenge to the United States. National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said this on Wednesday.
Nevertheless, according to the US’s senior defense official, constraining “a profoundly dangerous Russia” remains a key goal.
The long-awaited national security strategy, a document required by Congress, was finally released on Wednesday after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February. The strategy outlines two threats: Russia and China.
“The challenges the [People’s Republic of China] and Russia pose are, in important ways, distinct,” the document says. “We will prioritize maintaining an enduring competitive edge over the PRC while constraining a still profoundly dangerous Russia.”
Joe Biden’s worldview did not drastically change after the Ukraine war. But national security adviser Sullivan underscored that officials delayed releasing the document because they were unsure what direction the war would take.

Throughout the document, Russia and Ukraine wars appear in discussions of the issues related to energy, food security, and military readiness.
The document clarifies that China can alter the world order, and it asserts that Russia’s position has diminished because of the Ukraine conflict.

Joe Biden’s Strategy Guidance Document
Joe Biden’s strategy echoes the same things he set out with his campaign and in an “Interm National Security Strategy Guidance” document from early last year. His policies have helped support American strength at home, which translates to strength abroad.
In a speech at Georgetown University this week, Sullivan said the world is in the early years of a decisive decade.
The two main strategic challenges the United States faces are competing with China in a post-Cold War world and challenges from transnational issues that will not abide by borders or follow international rules, including climate change, food insecurity, and disease.
“The two challenges are intertwined,” he said. “If we sideline issues affecting everyday people’s lives, we can’t compete.”
According to Sullivan, the three main elements of the strategy are focused investments in tech and energy, modernizing the military, and diplomatic partnerships with other countries that believe in the rule of international law.
“The war in Ukraine has loomed large in forming this strategy,” Sullivan said. “And it’s not our belief that it will blot out the sun.”
