Meet Bitcoin Pizza, An Unusual Crypto Startup

Yerevan (CoinChapter.com) — We have a new addition to the growing list of mind-boggling headlines in the crypto space.

Bitcoin Pizza (what the heck, right?) is the latest entry into the world of Bitcoin. If you are already making assumptions, you need to stop because it is not what you are probably thinking.

Unlike what the name suggests, the pizza itself is not made of BTC and is not digital, like its namesake. It is not even made to look like a bitcoin. In fact, it is just a regular pizza, like the one you would find at any pizzeria.
However, unlike the common pizza, this is a pizza on a mission to help fund the research and development of Bitcoin.

Pompliano’s Brainchild

Anthony Pompliano is a crypto influencer and tech enthusiast. On Tuesday, he announced via Twitter video his plans to launch a new initiative called Bitcoin Pizza. According to him, his initiative aims to help fund cryptocurrency’s research and development.

The tech investor plans to partner with pizzerias in 10 US cities to deliver Bitcoin Pizzas between May 22-29. The cities offering a Bitcoin Pizza are Seattle, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Austin, Houston, Chicago, Miami, Washington D.C., New York City, and Boston. The prices of the Pizzas will vary from city to city.

Pizza for Bitcoin Development

The Profits generated from the initiative will be donated to the Human Rights Foundation’s Bitcoin Development Fund.

According to the fund’s website, “The Human Rights Foundation has launched a fund to support open-source software developers who are making the Bitcoin network more private, decentralized, and resilient so that it can better serve as a financial tool for human rights activists, civil society organizations, and journalists around the world.

Pompliano’s project will launch on May 22. This year marks the 11th anniversary of the first commercial transaction using a decentralized digital currency. On May 22, 2010, programmer Laszlo Hanyecz traded 10,000 BTC for two Papa John’s pizzas. This purchase helped cement the date in history as Bitcoin Pizza Day.

If you thought you heard it all, here is the shocker. Bitcoin Pizza will not accept BTC as a mode of payment.

The website allows customers to pay through Google Pay or credit card. This fact quickly became a talking point among crypto circles. How can an initiative called Bitcoin Pizza, launched on a day to mark the first-ever digital currency transaction, not accept payment in digital currency?

Meanwhile, the organizers have said that they are looking into adding the option soon.

But until that happens, no BTC for Bitcoin Pizza.
