However, despite the downtrend, users’ interest in digital assets isn’t declining. Data from Google search trends indicate that searches for “How to buy Bitcoin” have risen significantly.

Similarly, in a new study, experts at research firm DollarGeek, have revealed the most searched cryptocurrencies globally this year. Notably, the study leveraged Google trends data, among other information, to release the survey. Here are the five most Googled cryptocurrencies of 2022.

1. Bitcoin

Bitcoin’s largest digital asset is the world’s most Googled cryptocurrency of 2022, according to DollarGeek. The research revealed that Bitcoin was searched for in the United States about 4.6 million times annually in 2022.

The study also revealed that Bitcoin has the most searches globally amongst all cryptocurrencies, with 28.5 million searches worldwide every month. Although Bitcoin’s value slumped significantly this year, the asset has held investors’ interest.

Bitcoin price at the time of publication stands at $16,798, down 75% from its all-time high on Nov 10, 2021. Additionally, it is important to note that Bitcoin was also the first cryptocurrency to be introduced, being released in 2009.

2. Shiba Inu

Ethereum-based altcoin Shiba Inu according to the survey, was the second most Googled digital asset in 2022. Shiba Inu cryptocurrency in the US registered about 1.3 million searches annually in 2022.

The research further disclosed that the meme coin has a global search of more than 4.4 million monthly searches worldwide. Although very little is known about “Ryoshi,” the coin’s founder, released in 2020, it has grown impressively.

Notably, Shiba Inu 2022 proved itself as a viable token. It also recorded major developments recently when it got accepted as a form of payment in some web2 and top-rated hotels in the United Emirates.

3. Dogecoin (DOGE)

Dogecoin (DOGE), the leading meme coin by market cap, comes in third place as the most searched token of 2022. The meme coin this year received around 729,000 searches every month in the United States.

Impressively, Dogecoin surpassed Shiba Inu coin on global searches gathering an average of 5.9 million searches globally this year. DOGE, considered one of the first meme coins, was created as a joke in late 2013.

Dogecoin is one of the most searched cryptocurrencies this year, and Twitter CEO Elon Musk publicly backs it. Musk has made several tweets supporting Dogecoin, linked to multiple price pumps. Interestingly, Dogecoin has more than 2.3 million followers on its subreddit – r/dogecoin.

4. Ethereum (ETH)

Fourth on the list of most searched cryptos is Ethereum (ETH) – the largest altcoin in the industry. Ether holds this position on the list by receiving an average of 611,000 Google searches in the US in 2022.

Additionally, the token received around 3.84 million on average worldwide every month. It is also one of Bitcoin’s biggest competitors in the cryptocurrency market, being the second largest in market cap.

An open-source platform, Ethereum became one of the first cryptocurrencies to deploy smart contracts on its platform. Notably, with smart contracts, developers can easily launch various DeFi tools and list DApps, NFTs, and other protocols on the Ethereum chain.

In addition, Ethereum’s popularity comes from the cryptocurrency’s new upgrade. Recall that Vitalik Buterin, Ethereum founder, on Sep. 15, 2022, announced that the Ethereum network has successfully moved from a proof-of-work consensus mechanism to a proof-of-stake.

Other notable mentions include Litecoin, which averaged 269,000 searches in the US and 796,000 globally. Furthermore, Cardano also received 247,000 average US searches a month and 1,470,000 worldwide.

XRP recorded 237,000 US searches a month and 1,300,000 worldwide. Safemoon, on the other hand, received 178,000 monthly US searches and 1,030,000 worldwide. Finally, nexus rounds out the top ten with 175,000 average searches in the US every month and 734,000 globally.
