UGLY! Ripple’s Chris Larsen Allegedly Bribed Greenpeace to Badmouth Bitcoin

LAGOS (CoinChapter.com) —  Greenpeace USA, a global campaigning network integrity, has come under questioning as new allegations have emerged claiming that Ripple co-founder Chris Larsen is financing the organization to serve the blockchain network’s controversial interest.

In detail, a pseudonym Redditor u/Antana18 claims that Greenpeace USA received $5 million from Larsen to lobby against Bitcoin. Notably, the environment focus organization launched a campaign to change Bitcoin’s consensus mechanism from proof of work to proof of stake.

In a post shared on Tuesday, the Redditor accused Greenpeace USA of receiving money from Larsen to spread false information about Bitcoin and its impact on the environment. In addition, the user alleged that Larsen was financing Greenpeace USA to try to weaken Bitcoin, which he saw as a competing project.

“Greenpeace USA and the Environmental Working Group took a $5M donation from Ripple’s Chris Larsen to lobby against/ spread misinformation about Bitcoin and its environmental impact lobbying towards a code change. […] I found it very remarkable to see Larsen to use Greenpeace and ESG agenda as a way to weaken potential competing projects!”

Greenpeace USA Allegations Against Bitcoin’s PoW

It is worth noting that Greenpeace USA has been condemning and rolling out smear campaigns against Bitcoin and Proof of Work. Earlier this year, the organization launched the “Change the Code, Not The Climate” campaign. Interestingly, Ripple co-founder Larsen provided funding for the campaign.

Greenpeace USA argues that Bitcoin mining is causing many new global warming problems in the United States. The organization claims that Bitcoin’s proof-of-work mechanism consumes too much energy, which invariably hurts the environment.

The NGO also argues that using methane gas that would otherwise leak out and, according to experts, can make Bitcoin mining more environmentally friendly was false. Notably, the group blames Bitcoin miners for higher electricity prices, the overall increase in CO2 emissions, and local air pollution, among others.

“Cryptocurrency mining is an extremely energy-intensive process. It threatens the ability of governments across the globe to reduce our dependence on climate-warming fossil fuels. If we do not take action to limit this growing industry now. We will not meet the goals set forth by the Paris Agreement on Climate Change.”

Bitcoin’s emissions are lower than those of Apple, Microsoft —Expert

Meanwhile, Daniel Batten, a Bitcoin expert and environmental activist debunked several Greenpeace USA claims against Bitcoin. Batten, via a tweet, explained that Bitcoin’s emissions are lower than those of stocks like Apple or Microsoft.

He also indicated that mining Bitcoin using methane could remove 13 times more environmental emissions than coal. As a result, Bitcoin mining can reduce 0.15°C of climate change. Mining becomes carbon negative because it uses methane gas that flares into the air to generate electricity.

Considering that several of Greenpeace USA’s claims against Bitcoin has been proven to be false, it is fair to conclude that the organization is after Bitcoin for ulterior reasons.

Since Apple and Microsoft’s emissions are higher than Bitcoin’s, why have they not yet been criticized by Greenpeace?

Why is the environment-based organization partnering and receiving donations from persons who own assets destroying the climate? These questions allow listening ears to Redditors like u/Antana18 and show the NGO can’t be trusted.
