Former US President Donald Trump Sues Ex-Lawyer, Michael Cohen, For Over $500M

Key Takeaways

  • Donald Trump has brought a lawsuit to silence former attorney Michael Cohen
  • Cohen was instrumental in paying $130,000 to pornstar Stormy Daniels on behalf of Trump
  • He is expected to be one of the key witnesses in the ongoing case against Donald Trump

YEREVAN (CoinChapter.com) — Former US President Donald Trump has brought a $500 million lawsuit against his former lawyer Michael Cohen. Last month, Trump became the first President of the country to face criminal charges. Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg indicted him and later produced him in court for arraignment, where he plead not guilty

Cohen, who was Trump’s top fixer, is one of the star witnesses in the case against him.

In December 2018, Cohen pleaded guilty to campaign finance mismanagement charges on behalf of then Presidential candidate Donald Trump.

He also accepted that he had lied to the US Congress to shield Trump, among other crimes. He was sentenced to three years and spent about 13 months in prison and a year and a half in home confinement.

However, his sentence ended in November 2021 after being cut short, thanks to his good behavior when under arrest.

In a Twitter post, Cohen revealed the case against him and pledged that he would continue to hold Trump accountable.

Michael Cohen betrayed Donald Trump

The fact that his long-time ally has joined hands with the prosecution to capture him has angered Donald Trump. Betrayed and irritated, the former US President has accused him of “spreading falsehood” against him in a case filed in federal court in Florida.

Cohen had negotiated a non-disclosure agreement (NDA) in 2016 with pornstar Stormy Daniels to conceal her affair with Trump ten years earlier. To buy her silence, he had paid her $130,000 on behalf of his client.

But he flipped against Trump later, opening the floodgates which led to his eventual indictment. So now, Trump is looking to silence him before Cohen makes it to the witness stand when the court proceedings begin.

“During one such appearance, for example, Defendant discussed that he testified in front of the Manhattan District Attorney’s grand jury, and suggested that Plaintiff was, by virtue of Defendant’s knowledge of confidential information, criminally exposed,”

the lawsuit states.

Meanwhile, Cohen’s attorney Lanny J. Davis, claimed Trump’s lawsuit would not bear the desired results.

Michael Cohen’s attorney, Lanny Davis, has slammed Donald Trump for the lawsuit.

“Mr. Trump appears once again to be using and abusing the judicial system as a form of harassment and intimidation against Michael Cohen. It appears he is terrified by his looming legal perils and is attempting to send a message to other potential witnesses who are cooperating with prosecutors against him,”

Cohen’s lawyer further said.

Meanwhile, Trump has once again reiterated that he will seek a nomination from the Republican party to be the Presidential candidate in 2024. While the court case against him doesn’t prevent that from happening, can he garner enough support? Time will show.
