PATNA (CoinChapter.com) — Ukraine’s ambassador to the US, Oksana Markarova, has called for a “very harsh” global response to Russia’s nuclear weapon threats against her country.

During an appearance on “Face the Nation,” Ambassador Markarova addressed French President Emmanuel Macron’s statement that France would not retaliate in kind if Russia launched a nuclear attack against Ukraine.

Markarova further highlighted that President Putin’s nuclear war threat is a bigger issue than just the ongoing war. The ambassador noted that Ukraine voluntarily gave up its nuclear weapon arsenal after ensuring safety from the other nuclear powers.

Hence, Russia’s nuclear weapon threat would risk the entire nuclear deterrence system. Moreover, the involvement of Russia’s nuclear weapons in the ongoing power struggle would effectively jeopardize the security infrastructure of Europe.

We in Ukraine will resist and we will not give up regardless of what Russian Federation is using against us. We have, I think, proven it, from rockets, to atrocities to anything that they try to do in Ukraine. It doesn’t break our will. So there is no point for Russian Federation to use anything else because it will not stop us in defending our home

Ambassador Markarova said.

Additionally, Markarova stated that global opposition to a potential Russian nuclear weapon attack is vital for the health of international security.

Speaking about President Putin’s statement about stopping soldier mobilization within a couple of weeks, the ambassador said the decision was that the move had been a failure. Markarova also noted that the mobilized soldiers were ill-equipped and under-prepared.

Putin Nuclear Threat Has Countries Worried

The threat of a nuclear war is a fear that haunts nearly everyone. Nuclear weapons do not just destroy a place. They render it inhabitable for generations. As a result, Russian president Vladimir Putin’s threat to use nuclear weapons has the world holding its breath.

However, the west should not give in to Russia’s nuclear blackmail, as that would set a dangerous precedent. In a scenario where the world makes concessions to Russia, Ukraine would lose considerable territory.

In addition, Eastern European countries would question the benefits of remaining a part of the European Union, and NATO’s nuclear deterrence program would become a joke.

Last week, historian Timothy Snyder of Yale University said in an essay that giving in to nuclear blackmail would make future nuclear wars “much more likely.”

Moreover, it is important to remember that a nuclear aggressor would be left with the contaminated territory and no allies. In addition, a Russian nuclear weapon attack against a country that it’s allegedly “liberating” could cost president Putin legitimacy and support.

President Putin’s war is not only against international law, it seeks to destroy the entire international rules-based order, on which our peace and security depend.
