YEREVAN (CoinChapter.com) — Ukraine’s finance minister Serhiy Marchenko believes Kyiv should leverage its bilateral relationship with China to end the war in his country that began with the Russian invasion more than a year ago.

The remark comes hours after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky held a telephone conversation with his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping.

“I am not fully convinced that we can emphasize something particular after this conversation but what I truly can tell you is that it is important to continue dialogue between our countries. We really understand the importance of China and we really understand the importance for us to create our own relationship with China and to prevent China [from fully supporting] Russia,”

CNBC reported Marchenko saying.

In recent months, Beijing has ramped up its efforts to gain prominence in global politics. Against the backdrop of the West’s failure to end the war, President Xi has offered his version of a peace plan as an alternative.

In March, when Xi visited Russia, Russian President Vladimir Putin approved of China’s intervention in solving the conflict. He even claimed that the Chinese Peace Plan holds merit and expressed willingness to implement the plan should Ukraine reciprocate

Earlier this year, China brokered a truce between long-time enemies Iran and Saudi Arabia. Encouraged by this success, Xi vowed to increase his country’s role and influence on international affairs.

Chinese President Xi Jinping speaks to Zelensky

On April 26, 2023, Chinese President Xi Jinping held a telephone conversation with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. The over-one-hour-long discussion is the first between the two leaders since Russia’s invasion began in February last year.

During the talk, the Chinese President urged Zelensky to negotiate a peace agreement with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin.

“On the issue of the Ukraine crisis, China has always stood on the side of peace and its core position is to promote peace talks,”

Chinese state broadcaster CCTV reported Xi as saying.

Zelensky, who announced his meeting with Xi on Twitter, appointed Pavel Ryabikin, the former head of Ukraine’s Ministry of strategic industries, as the country’s new ambassador to China. Kyiv has not had an envoy to Beijing since February 2021.

Meanwhile, China announced it will send special representatives to Ukraine.

“The Chinese side will send a special representative of the Chinese government on Eurasian affairs to visit Ukraine and other countries to conduct in-depth communication with all parties for a political settlement of the Ukrainian crisis,”

China’s foreign ministry said at a press conference.

The United States, already irked by Beijing’s growing influence, had earlier slammed Xi’s efforts in negotiating peace in Ukraine. According to Washington, China has provided diplomatic and political support to Russia. As a result, Xi and his Government cannot be impartial brokers of peace in the conflict.

Nevertheless, the Ukrainian Finance Minister believes, that Beijing can use its good relations with Moscow “to convince Russia to stop this bloody war in Ukraine.”
