YEREVAN (CoinChapter.com) — Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky has asked his parliament to impose sanctions against Iran for 50 years. According to reports, the draft resolution he sent to lawmakers will impose a complete ban on trade with Tehran, which Kyiv sees as Russia’s ally.

The additional sanctions come from those imposed by the US and the European Union (EU). These will also rule out the transfer of technologies to Iran and prevent Ukrainian individuals and firms from investing in the country.

The draft resolution also entails halting Iranian transit through Ukrainian territory and blocking the withdrawal of Iranian assets from Ukraine.

Ukraine’s parliament must grant its approval for the bill to be enacted as law. However, per the information on the parliament’s website, the vote for the bill has not yet been scheduled.

The sanctions, though a radical step, are not surprising. According to reports, Iran has supplied Russia with military hardware, including the Shahed loitering munition.

Kyiv has long maintained that the Kremlin has used hundreds of these Iranian drones against Ukraine in the ongoing invasion. The West has also sanctioned Tehran and slammed it for supplying Vladimir Putin with the deadly Shaheds.

During the recent overnight drone attack on May 28, Russia allegedly deployed at least 54 Shahed drones. The Ukrainian air defense forces successfully shot down 52 of the drones. However, the debris from the downed drones inflicted civilian casualties on the ground in Kyiv.

Last week, President Volodymyr Zelensky urged Iran to rethink supplying deadly Shahed drones to Russia.

“The simple question is this: what is your interest in being an accomplice to Russian terror? What is the benefit to Iran of such cynical killing? By Russian hands, but with your weapons… Your Shaheds, which terrorise Ukraine every night, mean only that the people of Iran are being driven deeper and deeper into the dark side of history,”

Zelensky said.

Meanwhile, Tehran hit back at Zelensky, accusing the Ukrainian President of “anti-Iranian propaganda.”

“The Ukrainian president’s repeat of delusional claims against the Islamic Republic of Iran is in line with the anti-Iranian propaganda and media war aimed at attracting as many arms and financial aid as possible from Western countries,”

Iran’s foreign ministry spokesman Nasser Kanaani said in a statement, according to the Reuters news agency.

Will the recent attempted crackdown on Iran help Ukraine get more support from the Biden Administration? Time will show.
